Rain postpones the first 2009 meeting of these teams. The make up date was 9/3/09 and the White Sox won 5-0. This was the first time a Cubs vs. White Sox game was postponed since the interleague games became official.

Walk 6 batters and you're probably going to lose. Walk zero batters, and you're probably going to win. That's the way it went for starting pitchers Ryan Dempster (6 walks), and John Danks (0 walks). Danks' shines with 7 IP, 1 ER, 5 H, 9 K's and as mentioned, 0 BB's. The Cubs' hitters continue to underperform to expectations and can only manage an extra base hit from Aaron Miles and "the gamer" (get it??) Milton Bradley gets 2 hits to raise his season average to .234. For the "Pale Hose"... Alexi Ramirez "put one on the board" by hitting his 6 HR of the year, and Scott Podsednik continues to mimick his past White Sox success by picking up 2 hits and his 9th SB of the year. Scott Linebrink and Bobby Jenks both pitch 1 scoreless inning in relief and give up 0 hits and strike out one. Jenks picks up his 15th save of the year. |

Goose eggs across the first five innings and the White Sox score first with one in the top of the 6th and then go ahead on Alexi Ramirez's 2nd HR in as many days and the Sox go up 5 to 1 heading into the bottom of the 8th and then, the Cubs suddenly find some spunk with Gavin Floyd out of the game (Floyd went 7 IP, 1ER). Micah Hoffpair gets on base with an error by Chris Getz, and a few batters later, swinging at the first pitch for the fourth straight at bat, Derrek Lee homers into the basket in right field, and up steps last year's Rookie of the Year; Geovany Soto and he promptly hits a solo shot to tie the game. A Reed Johnson pinch hit single, an Andres Blaco sacrifice, and an Alfonso Soriano single then plates Johnson for the come from behind Cubbies to even the series up once again with 34 wins for each team against each other. word up.

Making his 3rd start in the majors, Rookie Carlos Torres throws seven shutout innings to give the edge to the 2009 Crosstown Classic to the Chicago White Sox, and also to give the White Sox the overall lead in the games 37-35. Alfonso Soriano strikes out three times and continues his sub par season with a missplay in the 8th. With a runner at first base, A.J. Pierzynski flies one to left. "Fonzie", hampered by a sore left knee, slipped while going after the fly ball, and it drops. The Sox score a run, and AJ was safe at third on the error. Paulie Konerko followed with an RBI single, and the Cubs do what they do best in 2009, and that's beat up water coolers and gatorade machines in the dugout. Today's champ is Ryan Dempster, who took his frustration out by kicking the water fountain. "I slipped, and when I slipped I lost my balance," Soriano said. "I don't make an excuse, but that's the first time it happened -- that I slipped and missed the ball." "The last time I checked, we didn't score any runs," Aramis Ramirez said, "so even if [Soriano] makes that play, we lose, 1-0. Nobody wants to make a mistake on the field. 'Sori' doesn't want to make mistakes. Nobody wants to be embarrassed like that. We have to pick it up, that's the bottom line." |
