Notable Names
PlayerCubsSoxWhy It Matters
Ron Santo ★1960–731974Beloved Cub his entire career. Played one year on the South Side at the end. Now in the Hall of Fame. The one year with the Sox is conveniently forgotten.
Sammy Sosa1992–20041989–91Started on the South Side as a teenager, became the North Side’s greatest slugger. 609 career HRs. The 1998 home run chase was everything.
Jose Quintana2017–202012–17Traded from the Sox to the Cubs in July 2017. A legitimate ace for both. One of the more significant crosstown trades in recent memory.
Jeff Samardzija2008–142015Grew up a Cubs fan in Valparaiso, Indiana. Became a legit ace on the North Side. Then crossed the street. Then got lit up by the Cubs. It was very funny.
Nick Madrigal2022–242020–21Sox drafted him 4th overall in 2018. Traded to the Cubs in the Craig Kimbrel deal. Has been more productive on the North Side than the South.
Craig Kimbrel2019–212021Was a Cub, traded to the Sox mid-2021. Then gave up HRs to Patrick Wisdom and Ian Happ when he faced his former team. Karma.
Don Kessinger1964–751977–79Six-time All-Star shortstop with the Cubs. Ended career on the South Side as a player-manager.
Rich Gossage ★19881972–76Hall of Famer. Started his career on the South Side. Much later ended up on the North Side briefly.
Mike Tauchman New2023–242025First former Cub to hit a HR off a former Sox pitcher in Crosstown Classic history (Elias Sports Bureau, May 2025). The rivalry goes deep.
Steve Stone1973, 1977–781973Pitched for both. Then broadcast for both for decades. Nobody has seen more Crosstown Classic games from a broadcast booth than Steve Stone.
Phil Cavarretta1934–531954–5520 seasons as a Cub, then two with the Sox. Chicago through and through.
Johnny Evers ★1902–131922Of Tinker-to-Evers-to-Chance fame. Hall of Famer. Brief stop with the Sox at the end of a legendary career.
