2026 Series Notes

The 2026 Crosstown Classic is MLB's official Rivalry Weekend series — Both teams entered May over .500 for the first time in the Crosstown Classic since 2008.

The Sox took the May series behind their young core. Game Two is a Home Run Bonanza! Sox win 8-3 and the Cubs' Taillon gets shelled and gives up 8 ER thru 5 IP. Meanwhile the Sox Davis goes 6 IP, 5 hits, 7 K's and 1 ER. Murakami hits 2 HRs and the Sox hit five (Benintendi, Vargas, Montgomery also go deep). Cubs can only respond with PCA and Amaya dingers. Edgar Quero — the 21-year-old catcher acquired in the Garrett Crochet trade — went 4-for-5 in Game 1 and then won Game 3 with a walk-off two-run homer in the 10th off a 95.5 mph fastball. First Sox series win since 2022.

The August series starts well for the Cubs with a 7-5 electric win at Wrigley Field on Aug 17th allowing the Cubs to hold a two game All-time lead in the Crosstown Classic. Sox need to win both remaining games to at least tie the All-time series. PCA hits his 5th lead-off HR and then his first walk-off HR of his career. Suzuki also goes deep for the Cubs. Cubs up 2-0 when Grichuk homered 404 feet to center, knocking in Murakami and Vargas, pushing the Sox up 3-2. Sox fielding erros lead to 2 runs by Cubs, putting them on top 4-3. Benintendi goes deep, scoring Murakami to put Sox up 5-4. See-saw type of game. Nico, Nico, Nico, and Nico brings home Taylor to tie it up at 5. Nico w 4 hits on the night. Then PCA does what PCA has been doing all year...

Tues Aug 18th win— assures the Cubs will hold the All-time Crosstown Classic title until the 2027 Crosstown Classic is played in early July 2027, as Cubs are up 3 games on the Sox and only 1 game left— Aug 19th. Cubs hold three game lead at 80-77. On Aug 17th, the White Sox decide to pitch to PCA, and they make him pay for that with a walk-off HR. So, when game resumes after an 88 minute rain delay (see video below for Rain Delay Theater Chicago coming together fun), with the game tied 3-3, this time the Sox decide to intentionally walk PCA after Carson Kelly doubles, Conforto strikes out, PCA is then walked, Suzuki fouls out, and intentionally walking doesn't work either as Bregman hits a walk-off single to bring Kelly home (which by the way... is Kelly's traditional walk-up song Take Me Home Tonight by Eddie Money) so the Cubs can fly the W.

Wed Aug 19th win— Sox take the final game at Wrigley to tie the 2026 season series at 3 games each. Star of the game was White Sox 31 year old pitcher Jose Urquidy (5 years w Astros, 1 each with Tigers and Pirates). Urquidy comes in after the opener Newcomb throws 2 no hit innings and Urquidy goes 6 IP, 2 hits and 8 strikeouts. Cubs only manage 2 hits total. Clay Holmes starts well for Cubs, with 5 IP, 6 H, and 1 ER. Benintendi singles home Vargas in the 6th and Montgomery doubles home Grichuk and Vargas in the 8th to get those insurance runs just in case. They weren't needed as the Cubs bats go silent and were unable to plate any runners.
