2008 Series Notes
2008 was the first time in Crosstown Classic history that both the Cubs and the White Sox were in first place in their respective divisions when they met. The whole city was paying attention. And then John Danks opened his mouth.
Before the Wrigley series, Sox starter John Danks said: “We’ll all be bringing our nose plugs, try not to smell all the urine over there. Nah, we’re looking to have fun over there, but that place is a [bleep] hole.” Cubs fans were delighted to use this as motivation. Danks started Game 1 at Wrigley and gave up the walk-off homer to Ramirez. Good job, John.
The Wrigley series was spectacular. Game 1: Aramis Ramirez hits two home runs, the second a walk-off in the bottom of the 9th. Game 2: Jim Edmonds homers twice in one inning — only the 3rd Cub ever to accomplish that, joining Sammy Sosa and Mark Bellhorn. Cubs scored 9 runs in the 4th inning alone. Game 3 was ESPN Sunday Night Baseball: Ryan Dempster improved to 9-0 at home, and Ramirez finished the weekend with 4 HR and 7 RBI.
Then the series moved to U.S. Cellular and the Sox swept all three right back. Nick Swisher hit a grand slam. Carlos Quentin was on an MVP-caliber tear. Buehrle closed it out in Game 6. Three apiece. Dead even. Again.
Series stats: Cubs hit .311 with 12 HR. Sox hit .296 with 11 HR. ERA: Cubs 6.56, Sox 5.12. After 2008: Cubs 33, Sox 33.
