2010 Series Notes

2010 was the first year of the BP Crosstown Cup — an actual trophy awarded to the team winning the season series, with a tiebreaker going to whoever won the last game. The Sox took it home in year one.

The Wrigley series had the game of the year on June 13: Gavin Floyd threw 6 no-hit innings for the Sox. Ted Lilly threw 6 no-hit innings for the Cubs. Floyd gave up his first hit in the 7th to Soriano, and Chad Tracy drove him in for the only run of the game. Lilly then took his no-hitter into the 9th — Juan Pierre pinch-hit and singled to break it up. Carlos Marmol came in, walked the bases loaded, balked twice, walked Rios intentionally, and then got Konerko on a force at home and Quentin on a pop fly. Cubs 1-0. Only the second game in MLB history with double no-hitters through 9 innings — the other was Reds at Cubs, May 2, 1917.

Then June 25 at U.S. Cellular: Carlos Zambrano started, Juan Pierre doubled to lead off, and something set Big Z off. He went into the dugout screaming at Derrek Lee. Geovany Soto had to physically restrain him. Lou Piniella sent him home. Jim Hendry suspended him indefinitely. Peavy threw 7 innings and struck out 9. Sox win 6-0. The Gatorade cooler was unavailable for comment, but reportedly felt safer than usual.

The Sox won 10 straight against the Cubs before the Cubs finally stopped it on June 27, 8-6, with Tyler Colvin going 3-for-5 with a 3-run HR and 4 RBI. Konerko hit his 20th career Crosstown Classic HR in that game — the all-time record. After 2010: Sox 41, Cubs 37.
