After three straight years of losing the season series, the Cubs finally got theirs back in 2004. The key was the 4th of July weekend at Wrigley Field — three games over the holiday, Cubs won all three. July 2, 3, and 4. Three wins, including a tight 2-1 finale on Independence Day. The North Side celebrated accordingly.
The June series at U.S. Cellular went 2-1 Sox — same story as always on the South Side. But the Cubs answered at home when it counted, sweeping the July series to take the overall edge 4-2.
The 2004 Cubs finished 89-73 under Dusty Baker, a year after the Bartman heartbreak. Kerry Wood and Mark Prior were still mostly healthy. Sammy Sosa was still Sammy Sosa, though that relationship was starting to fray. The team had talent but couldn’t get back to October. The Crosstown Classic was at least a bright spot.
After 2004: Sox 22, Cubs 20 — South Side lead cut to two.
