2011 Series Notes

Third straight year the Sox took the Crosstown Classic 4-2. The June series at U.S. Cellular had everything — a Zambrano redemption arc, an Ozzie ejection with a side of mask-kicking, Carlos Pena homering in all three games, and AJ Pierzynski actually legging out a triple. “Yes, you read that right,” as the original notes say.

Zambrano’s Game 1 was a direct response to his 2010 meltdown. Eight innings, gave up 3 in the first and nothing else. Ozzie Guillen got ejected in the 6th arguing an Alexei Ramirez at-bat and kicked Geovany Soto’s catcher’s mask on the way out. Soto laughed at him. Lowest attendance in series history that day: 36,005.

July 2 at Wrigley was the pitching gem: Matt Garza took a no-hitter into the 6th before Juan Pierre singled. Phil Humber threw 7 innings of shutout ball. Sox turned three double plays in the first three innings. Cubs went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position. Sox win 1-0. 93 degrees. Nobody was happy except the South Side.

The Cubs salvaged the finale on July 3, a beautiful 71-degree day, with Rodrigo Lopez throwing 7 innings of 2-hit ball. Aramis Ramirez hit his 12th HR of the season. The Sox’ only run came on a Kerry Wood wild pitch. But it was too late — Sox took the series and the Crosstown Classic for the third straight year. After 2011: Sox 45, Cubs 39.
