The Sox answered the 2013 sweep with a dominant 2014 performance, winning three of four. The series was played entirely in May, all four games in quick succession. The Sox took the first three — a 12-inning win in Game 1, then back-to-back victories including an 8-3 win at the Cell. Gordon Beckham homered twice across the series.
The Cubs salvaged the finale with a 12-5 win back at the Cell on May 8, with Anthony Rizzo, Starlin Castro, and Mike Olt all going deep. But it was too little, too late. The Crosstown Classic went back to the South Side.
2014 was the year the Cubs’ rebuild was still firmly in progress under Theo Epstein. Rizzo and Castro were the building blocks. Kris Bryant was a year away. After 2014: Sox 52, Cubs 46.
