2006 Series Notes

The most entertaining Crosstown Classic to this point — and the one everyone remembers for a reason that had nothing to do with the final score.

May 20, U.S. Cellular Field. Bottom of the ninth. White Sox leading 7-0. AJ Pierzynski scores on a groundout, slaps the plate, and pops up to celebrate. Cubs catcher Michael Barrett did not appreciate the theatrics. So he punched him. Right there at home plate, in front of a sellout crowd and a national audience. Barrett was ejected and suspended. Pierzynski milked it perfectly. The rivalry had a defining moment.

But that wasn’t even the wildest game of the series. That came on July 2 at Wrigley Field — Cubs 15, White Sox 11. Eight home runs. Carlos Zambrano hit one. Angel Pagan hit two. The Cubs scored 7 in the first inning. 20 hits, 14 hits. It remains the highest-scoring game in Crosstown Classic history — 26 combined runs. Jim Thome was on the Sox by then, and even he couldn’t stop the bleeding.

The Sox still won the series 4-2. The defending World Series champions handled business. But Chicago had two stories to talk about all summer: the punch, and the 15-11 game.
