1998 Series Notes

Three games at Wrigley Field in June 1998. Cubs sweep all three. The year Sammy Sosa became Sammy Sosa.

Sosa entered the series on June 5th with 16 home runs. He left it on June 7th with 19 — a home run in every single game against the South Side. The 1998 home run chase between Sosa and Mark McGwire was still building toward its peak, and the White Sox got a front-row preview of what the rest of the league was dealing with all summer.

The Sox weren’t exactly short on talent. Frank Thomas was at first. Albert Belle was in left field in his second year on the South Side. Robin Ventura at third. Magglio Ordonez was a 24-year-old playing his first full season in center. Ray Durham was steady at second. Jerry Manuel had just taken over as manager. It was a real roster — and the Cubs beat them three straight anyway.

Game 1 went 12 innings, the Cubs winning on a walk-off dinger from Brant Brown ("Oh No!"). Game 3 was a blowout — 13-7, Cubs scored 5 in the 1st and never looked back. The Wrigley faithful were very happy. It was that kind of summer on the North Side.
